Frederica Wilson Met With Postmaster General After Post Offices Closures
LIBERTY CITY (CBS4)- Congress woman Frederica Wilson met with officials in Liberty City Saturday to talk about the recent closing of a local post office.
The congress woman met with postmaster general Ronald Stroman to make sure that Edison residents have access to adequate postal services after the closing of Edison Post Office. The post office, located at 760 NW 62nd Street, has served residents since 1953.
At the end of March it was announced that two South Florida post offices, including Edison's, was to be closed permanently on Friday due to a decrease in revenue.
The other post office is the Miami International Airport Finance Unit located in the fourth floor of the airport terminal.
The United States Postal Office cites a drastic decline in mail volume and postage sales as the reason for the closure. It is estimated that nearly 30 percent of postal transactions are completed using alternate retail channels.
Officials report a 2010 revenue of $67.1 billion, down from $74.9 billion the previous year.
The United States Postal Service, in a financial crisis, back in January was considering shutting up to 2,000 post offices nationwide in 2011, according to a report from the Dow Jones news service.
The reduction of offices is needed due to falling revenues as people turn to the Internet and e-mail as communications platforms.
"The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses, and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations," said USPS spokeswoman Debbie Fetterly in Pembroke Pines.
All Post Office Box customers will receive a Change of Address card and information on Post Office Box availability and neighboring Post Offices.
The USPS is ensuring customers that the Finance Units are retail operations and their closures will not impact local mail delivery, according to the USPS.
