FPL Brings Down Cutler Plant Smokestacks
PALMETTO BAY (CBSMiami) – Florida Power and Light Company demolished two 150-foot-tall smokestacks Saturday morning in Palmetto Bay.
The stacks were at The Cutler Plant that has been inactive for more than four years.
They were brought down by controlled explosive charges.
According to FPL officials, the plant is no longer necessary as the company has invested in more efficient natural-gas power plants around South Florida.
This demolition comes a little less than one month after FPL brought down smokestacks at the Port Everglades Power Plant.
The Cutler Power Plant, that overlooks Biscayne Bay, is located on 85 acres and began servicing customers in 1949.
At one time, the plant powered 350,000 homes and was the largest power generator within FPL's company.
It was once feature in the 1961 film "Chivato" which was about American crusaders who joined counter-revolutionaries in Cuba to overthrown Fidel Castro.
Changes at the FPL power plants are part of multi-million dollar improvements company-wide.
