Former Miami Dolphins Greats Discuss Manning Sweepstakes
HOLLYWOOD (CBS4) - Former Miami Dolphins quarterback Bob Griese believes Peyton Manning would be a great fit for the Fins.
"It would make the Miami Dolphins a real contender in the AFC," Griese told CBS4's Carey Codd. "The defense is good. The offense is missing just a couple of pieces, one of which is quarterback and if Peyton signs, there is no problem at quarterback anymore."
Griese might get an argument though about the best fit for Manning from his son, Brian.
On ESPN Radio's Mike and Mike in the Morning Show on Friday, Brian Griese, said Denver would be a good fit for Manning. Brian Griese is a broadcaster for the Denver Broncos.
"What it's gonna come down to in my opinion is when John Elway sits down with Peyton Manning, can he have the kind of conversation and say to him, look I've been through this at this stage in your career," Griese said on ESPN Radio. "Remember, John Elway won two Super Bowls when he was 37 and 38."
Bob Griese said he owes his son a phone call.
"How did he get that smart?" Griese joked. "I mean how does he know that Denver is a good spot for Peyton Manning? I gotta call him up and say, hey, it's no better than Miami."
CBS4 News spoke to Griese and other South Florida sports celebrities as they gathered at a charity event Friday night at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood.
The event supported the Lauren's Kids Foundation, which works to prevent sexual abuse. The event also raised money for the Dade Schools Athletic Foundation.
Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra attended the event and said he'd love to see Manning wearing a Dolphin uniform.
"I've been here 17 years," Spoelstra said. "The Dolphins are my team. I root for them. I think it would be terrific."
Former Dolphins like Jeff Dellenbach believe Manning -- if he's fully recovered from several neck surgeries -- could be the answer to the Dolphins problems at quarterback.
"I think the franchise right now needs something big to give them a spark," Dellenbach said. "I don't think it gets much bigger than Peyton Manning. The Dan Marino era -- since then -- there hasn't been a whole lot in that position."
For now, these former Dolphin greats and other South Florida sports celebrities are waitin' to see what Peyton decides.
