Former Mayor Suarez Has Eyes On Dade Commission
MIAMI (CBS4) - Former Miami Mayor Xavier Suarez hasn't had much luck with politics since leaving the Mayor's office in the early 90's, but that's not about to stop him from trying again. Suarez told CBS4 Thursday that he plans to run for the Miami Commission, if the upcoming recall of Mayor Carlos Alvarez is successful.
Both Alvarez and commissioner Natacha Seijas are facing recall. If Seijas is removed from office, or another sitting commission decides to run for Alvarez's seat, that would leave vacant seats on the commission.
Suarez confirmed Thursday that he has been considering running in the next county election, but instead, would run for one of those potentially vacant seats, most likely that of Commissioner Carlos Gimenez. The commissioner has said he will run for Mayor if Alvarez is turned out .
Suarez was elected Mayor in 1985, and served 3 terms until he left office in 1993. He ran again for Mayor in 1997 against Joe Carollo, and while he won the election claims of irregularities caused all absentee ballots to be disqualified, putting Carollo into office.
Suarez has made a number of unsuccessful subsequent attempts to find a place on the public stage. His son successfully ran for a seat on the Miami commission.
Suarez said if the recall election is not successful, he plans to run for office in 2012.
