Former Dolphins Equip. Manager: Marino Never Asked Me to Break Rules
In the aftermath of Deflategate, Tony Egues, the former longtime Miami Dolphins Equipment Manager, joined 560 WQAM's Joe Rose Show to discuss his relationship with Hall-of-Fame quarterback Dan Marino and whether it was customary to alter his footballs before games.
"I've had the pleasure of working with Dan all those years," Egues said. "And usually those generational players -- the Dan Marinos, the Junior Seaus, the Jason Taylors -- those guys have such a deep respect for the game that they may be picky but they're never going to ask you to do something that's not within the rules. And Dan was very stern. There was no ambiguity relative to how those game balls were prepared. He wanted them brushed properly but there was never at all during my tenure -- there was never any kind of impropriety."
Although some may want to paint the picture that doctoring footballs outside of league parameters was a regular thing it didn't happen under Egues' watch with the Dolphins.
