Former Dade Corrections Guard Pleads Guilty To ID Theft
MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) – A former corrections officer at a South Florida state prison is facing up to a dozen years behind bars for stealing inmates' identification information for the purposes of tax fraud.
On Tuesday Bernard Beliard, 27, appeared in Miami federal court and pleaded guilty to aggravated identity theft and access device fraud charges.
Prosecutors say Beliard used his position at the South Florida Reception Center to gain access to lists containing personal information for 805 inmates from October until January.
Beliard met four times with a confidential FBI informant who said he would buy the information for use in committing tax fraud. Authorities say Beliard accepted $9,600 for the lists.
Beliard, who is no longer employed at the prison, will be sentenced in July.
