CORAL GABLES (CBSMiami) – The Miami Hurricanes' shiny new head coach Mark Richt has been assembling his coaching staff over the past week.

On Monday he added another piece to the puzzle, someone fans in South Florida will be familiar with.

Mike Rumph, who played for Miami during his college days and was a part of the Canes last national championship, has been hired as the team's cornerbacks coach.

Rumph, 36, played cornerback for the Hurricanes before moving on to the NFL, where he played the position for six years.

Now he's returning to his alma mater to be a part of what he's hoping is the revitalization of the program.

Rumph has spent the past three years as the head football coach at Plantation American Heritage School where he led the Patriots to back-to-back state championships.

American Heritage athletic director Karen Stearns confirmed to the Miami Herald that Rumph met with his team on Monday to inform them that he was leaving the school to join the Hurricanes.

While playing at Miami Rumph collected six career interceptions and was part of the powerhouse 2001 national championship team.

He was drafted in the first round of the 2002 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers.

Following his retirement from the NFL in 2007, Rumph quickly went into coaching.

In 2013 he replaced former Miami Dolphins center Jeff Dallenbach as the head coach at American Heritage.

In addition to the Patriots two state championships in 2013 and 2014, Rumph led the team to the regional semifinals this past season.

American Heritage would go 35-6 with Rumph as the team's head coach.

RICHT ADDS TWO MORE TO STAFF

The university also announced on Monday that Richt has added Stacy Searels and Ephraim Banda to the Hurricanes coaching staff.

Searels will serve as Miami's new offensive line coach, replacing longtime Cane Art Kehoe who was let go over the weekend.

Banda will coach the safeties.

"These individuals possess the type of qualities we are looking for in our staff," said Richt. "Each of these men will play a significant role in our team's development as we pursue excellence. I looking forward to working with each of these coaches."

SCOTT MOVES ON

Sports Radio 560 WQAM has confirmed that former Hurricanes interim head coach Larry Scott has accepted a position with the University of Tennessee.

Scott was named Miami's interim coach when Al Golden was fired following the Canes' 58-0 loss to Clemson in late October, the worst loss in school history.

The Hurricanes went 4-1 during the regular season under Scott before losing to Washington State in the Hyundai Sun Bowl 20-14.

Miami has not won a bowl game since 2006.
