Former BSO Deputy Charged In Fatal 2010 Crash
OAKLAND PARK (CBS4) - A former Broward County Sheriff's deputy has turned himself into authorities to face charges stemming from a 2010 car crash that killed 14-year-old Cara Catlin.
Franklyn McCurie, 23, is facing one charge of vehicular manslaughter and four misdemeanor counts of reckless driving.
In January 23, 2010, Catlin, a Northeast High School freshman, was riding in a Honda Civic with her stepsister Heather Meyer, 21, when McCurie's marked cruiser plowed into it as Meyer tried to make a left turn from North Dixie Highway onto 56th Street in Oakland Park.
The impact was so violent, it tore off the back of the Honda.
An investigation into the accident reveals that McCurie, was traveling at 89 miles per hour, more than twice the posted limit, when he slammed in Meyer's car killing Catlin. At the time of the accident McCurie was heading to a traffic stop to back up another deputy.
Witnesses said McCurie did not have his emergency lights or sirens on at the time of the crash.
