Local Mustang Dealer Touts Iconic Car Turning 50
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Fifty years ago today, at the World's Fair in New York City, Ford unveiled a car that captured the hearts of many Americans- the Mustang.
On Thursday, car enthusiasts around the world showed off their Mustangs and shared their stories.
Local antique car dealer, Ted Vernon spoke about his love affair with the vintage Mustang.
"They're just…iconic," he said.
He has 350 antique cars on his lot, SOBE Classic, but said Mustangs are by far his best seller.
"I ship them all over the world. I cannot get enough of them….After 50 years of being a well built, well-engineered automobile- people have gotten to know it and cherish them, and a lot of us grew up on these cars."
He said, in addition to their beauty, the Ford Mustang is known for its speed.
"It's God awful fast….It's just bad to the bone."
Vernon said Ford had the design and engineering right from the original car that was built in 1964 and cost just $2,300.
Nowadays, you'll pay roughly 50 times that if you want the top of the line silver vintage Shelby he has on his lot.
Whether it's the beauty, the speed, or the history of the Ford Mustang, one thing seems clear. As long as there are car enthusiasts, there will be folks like Vernon, ready to sing the Mustang's praises.
Ford said it has sold more than nine million Mustangs since the model was manufactured 50 years ago.
