MIAMI (CBSMiami) - A recent round of crash tests on large pick up trucks found some aren't as tough as they look.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) said the Ford F-150 SuperCab earned its top rating, performing best in all of its crash tests.
"When Ford redesigned this vehicle, they clearly did a good job of targeting all the crash modes," said the IIHS' Raul Arbelaez.
The crash tests replicate what happens when the truck runs off the road, hits a tree or pole, or another vehicle. Among the tests were two front impact crashes and one from the side.
"We looked at rear impact tests, and then, we also looked at roof strength tests," said Arbelaez.
Aside from Ford, the IIHS said the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Double Cab and the Toyota Tundra Double Cab received acceptable safety ratings.
The Dodge Ram 1500 Crew Cab and Quad Cab did not fair so well. They received poor ratings for vehicle structure. The IIHS said the force of the crashes in those two models shoved portions of the door hinges, instrument panels and steering columns toward the occupants.
While the IIHS does not make recommendations to automakers, it does encourage them to redesign their vehicles for better passenger safety.
