Fmr. Marlin Miguel Cabrera Wins Triple Crown
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Former Marlins star Miguel Cabrera, now of the Detroit Tigers, completed a feat Wednesday night that was 161 games in the making. Cabrera became the first player in 45 years to win the Triple Crown.
The Triple Crown goes to a player who leads a league in home runs, batting average, and runs batted in. Cabrera was playing against the Kansas City Royals and finished 0-2 with a strikeout before being pulled from the game in the fourth inning. The Kansas City crowd gave Cabrera a standing ovation.
Cabrera finished the season with a .330 batting average, 44 home runs, and 139 runs batted in. Angels rookie Mike Trout finished the season second in hitting at .326.
The last player to win the Triple Crown was Carl Yastrzemski in 1967. He finished the season with a .326 average, 44 home runs, and 121 RBI's.
Cabrera started his career with the Marlins until he was traded for a group of player who never contributed to the Marlins and only one contributed at the major league level, Cameron Maybin, who now plays for the San Diego Padres.
