Fmr. Florida CFO To Run For Congress
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (CBSMiami/AP) — Alex Sink, former chief financial officer for Florida and 2010 gubernatorial candidate, has set her eyes on a larger role in politics in the U.S. Congress.
Sink announced Wednesday that she will move to Pinellas County and run in a special election for the seat that had been held by the late U.S. Representative Bill Young. Young died earlier this month.
Sink is no stranger to politics and narrowly lost the 2010 gubernatorial race to Rick Scott. She considered running again against Scott, but decided in September against it.
In a statement Sink said she said she was responding to a "deep frustration with the dysfunctional and reckless politics of Washington" among Pinellas County residents.
Young was a Republican, but his district is viewed as a key pick-up opportunity for Democrats. Democrat Jessica Ehrlich, who lost to Young last year, had already declared her candidacy for 2014.
While Sink announced her intention to run for Congress, Democrats across the state are awaiting word from former Governor Charlie Crist on whether he will challenge Governor Scott next year.
So far, the only Democrat that's officially challenging Scott is state Senator Nan Rich.
