Florida Unemployment Ticks Up In July
TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami) – Florida's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose in July, climbing 0.2 percent from June to 8.8 percent. But, the year-over-year numbers were quite better with July's unemployment rate being nearly 2 points lower than July 2011.
Florida's seasonally adjusted totals kept the state unemployment rate 0.5 percent ahead of the national unemployment rate of 8.3 percent. The rise in the unemployment rate in Florida came from a decrease of 3,300 jobs in July.
The state reports the county-by-county numbers in not seasonally adjusted totals which can lead to discrepancies reading the two lines together.
That said Broward County's unemployment rate rose 0.3 percent in July to 8.1 percent. Year-over-year, Broward's unemployment rate dropped from 9.7 percent in July 2011 to 8.1 percent this July. All total, Broward County had 81,153 workers unemployed.
In Miami-Dade County, the unemployment rate ticked down to 9.9 percent from June's rate of 10.3 percent. The July numbers were more than 1.5 percent better than the numbers from the same time in 2011.
Still, Miami-Dade County had the most unemployed workers of any county in the state at 129,958. Miami-Dade's total unemployed workers were nearly 50,000 more than the next county with the most unemployed workers, which happened to be Broward County.
Total, Miami-Dade and Broward counties make up 24 percent, or just less than a quarter of the total unemployed workers in the state.
Monroe County's unemployment rate rose from 5.0 percent to 5.3 percent in July.
