Florida Man Convicted In Case Of Terror Group Travel

MIAMI (AP) -- A South Florida man has been sentenced to federal prison for lying to FBI agents about his attempts to travel to Africa to join a violent terrorist organization.

A five-year prison sentence was imposed last week on 24-year-old Solomon Zaid Alkadhi of Plantation. He pleaded guilty earlier this year to falsely telling the FBI he never tried to travel to Somalia to join the al-Shabab terrorist group. The group is an Islamic extremist organization seeking to oust Somalia's government through violence.

In his guilty plea, Alkadhi admitted that he had done online research on al-Shabab and later traveled in 2009 to Kenya in an attempt to join the group in Somalia.

Kenyan authorities stopped Alkadhi at the border and he was eventually returned to the U.S.
