Florida DOH: Tattoo Ink Used In Miami-Area Linked To Infection

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami) – Health officials are warning tattoo-seekers after certain inks have been linked to infection.
The Florida Department of Health said that anyone getting a tattoo is at risk for infection.
The warning comes after the Food and Drug Administration confirmed certain inks, which are manufactured in Florida, contain bacterial contamination.
On July 22, "A Thousand Virgins, Inc." recalled certain tattoo inks sold separately and in sets.
Unopened inks which were collected during an investigation were found to contain harmful microorganisms, including Mycobacterium chelonae.
Artists and consumers who purchase tattoo inks or who seek tattooing should examine the ink bottles and determine whether the product is part of the recall. Artists and consumers should not use and should dispose of tattoo inks that have been recalled.
Those who are particularly vulnerable to infection are those with pre-existing heart or circulatory disease, diabetes, or patients with compromised immune systems. Anyone who gets a tattoo should monitor the area closely and seek medical care if they notice redness, swelling, itching, bumps or blemishes, or have pain in the area of the tattoo that does not go away.
