MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) — Blood may run thicker than water but not when it comes to breaking the law.
Two South Florida brothers will spend years in federal prison after pleading guilty in an identity theft and unemployment insurance fraud case.
Court records show 20-year-old Stanley Fertil was sentenced last week to more than nine years behind bars and 19-year-old Steven Fertil was sentenced to about 12 years.
The Miami brothers previously pleaded guilty to fraud, conspiracy and aggravated identity theft charges.
Prosecutors say the pair fraudulently obtained personal identifying information of more than 4,000 people. Of those, 600 were used to obtain more than $815,000 in unemployment insurance.
The brothers were also ordered to pay the government $815,000 in restitution and will spend three years on probation once they are released from prison.
