ST. AUGUSTINE (AP) — A 77-year-old St. Augustine man is four weeks into a solo sail around the world in the hopes of becoming the fastest — and oldest — to accomplish the feat.
Stanley Paris set sail from Florida on Nov. 9, and on Friday was in the seas east of Brazil, where he had just crossed the equator.
Paris' vessel, the 630-foot Kiwi Spirit, was also designed to use no fossil fuels: it is powered only by the sun and wind.
He hopes to sail it from Bermuda to Bermuda in 150 days, which would beat the record set by the late Dodge Morgan in 1986.
His son, Alan Paris, told the St. Augustine Record that his father was two-days ahead of Morgan's pace.
Paris' journey can be followed by clicking here.
