Flood Of Trouble In Palm Beach County, Treasure Coast

JUPITER (CBSMiami/AP) — Schools are closed in Palm Beach, Martin, and St. Lucie Counties Friday due to flooding. In addition, the Palm Beach County Emergency Management Office reported a portion of Interstate 95, between mm 56 and 60, had to close due to flooding.

Emergency management reports the highway has since re-opened, but commuters are asked to try and avoid the area due to heavier traffic volume.

All of this from heavy rain that started falling late Thursday and continued overnight and early Friday morning.

When Peggy Hunter woke up the water was up to her front door.

"I got scared so I closed the door back," Hunter said.

The National Weather Service says the Boynton Beach area received 17.72 inches of rain on Thursday. Overnight, police towed about 40 vehicles stranded on flooded roads in Boynton Beach and more are still being towed.

Cesar Jones swept up debris from his front sidewalk after the water receded.

He said Friday morning no one could get in or out of his neighborhood.

"Its ridiculous. We had to park our cars at the foot of the street otherwise they would have been towed," added Jones.

It wasn't just the rainfall that created problems for some people.

Martin County Fire Rescue officials said a possible tornado in Hobe Sound damaged 30 homes. No injuries were reported, but officials said there were multiple downed power lines.

In St. Lucie County, a 9-mile stretch of Indian River Drive from the 4400 block all the way to the Martin County line crumbled.

A1A at Indiantown Road in Jupiter is closed.

The Palm Beach County area remains under a flood warning until 10:15 p.m.

More rain is expected Friday before the weather clears for the weekend.
