Fla. Senate To Vote On "Zero Tolerance" Bill
TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/AP) – A measure that would put a little leniency into the state school districts' "zero tolerance" policies is heading to the Senate for a final vote.
SB 1886, sponsored by Sen. Stephen Wise from Jacksonville, would require "petty acts of misconduct" to be handled in-house by schools and not by law enforcement. It would also allow misdemeanor incidents that didn't threaten school safety to be handled by school disciplinarians if a victim consents.
A study last year showed most Florida school districts still had harsh zero tolerance policies despite a 2009 law urging them to be more tolerant.
