Fla. AG Bondi Goes After Drug Names On T-Shirts
TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/NSF) -- Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi and her counterparts in Kentucky and Maine have demanded that a California-based clothing company stop selling shirts that include the names of prescription drugs.
Bondi, Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway and Maine Attorney General Janet Mills sent a letter Wednesday to Kitson, Inc., targeting t-shirts that look like sports jerseys but have the names "Adderall,'' "Xanax,'' and "Vicodin" on the back.
"Prescription drug abuse is not fun or humorous,'' the letter said. "We urge you to pull these shirts from your shelves."
The shirts sell for $58 each, according to Kitson's website.
In a Facebook post, Kitson criticized NBC's "Today Show" for a recent report about the shirts and pointed to drug-company television ads.
"The t shirts are simply a mirror of what is occurring in our culture,'' the Facebook post said. "Perhaps more discussion about those whose behavior truly contributes to the deaths every 19 minutes from prescription drugs, those who provide the opportunity for prescription drugs to fall into the hands of our youth, and those who flood the market with the ads, would be a more salient topic."
Bondi and other attorneys general in June successfully urged Urban Outfitters to pull products such as coffee mugs and drink holders that are made to look like bottles that might hold medicine.
