FIU Law School Student Identified As Shooting Victim
MIAMI GARDENS - (CBSMiami.com) - The woman who died in a Miami Gardens shooting was identified Saturday as a beloved Florida International University law school student who had high aspirations.
But police say Dannette Willory's ambitions ended early Friday morning when she was shot to death in Miami Gardens.
Another man who has not yet been identified was also found dead at 9 a.m. at the Walden Pond Apartment Complex, 830 NW 210th Street.
Both were found suffering from gunshot wounds in the parking lot. Willory was inside a Gray Nissan and the man was outside of the car.
Willory had been working as an intern at the Broward State Attorney's Office and was hoping to work as a prosecutor. She wasn't far from achieving her dream, she would have graduated this year.
"We were shocked," said Alexander Acosta, the dean of FIU's College of Law. "She was interning at the State Attorney's Office in Broward and she found her passion. She wanted to be a prosecutor. She wanted to prevent the kind of violence that took her life. You know, tonight's such a hard night because tonight would have been a night of celebration, a night she was looking forward to. We talked about what to do tonight, and she would have wanted her classmates to be here."
Officials at the time described what they saw.
"They were alive when fire rescue responded," said Miami Gardens police Captain Ralph Suarez told CBS4 News on Friday. "Fire rescue tried to do everything to keep them alive but they died on the scene."
Police say both died of gunshot wounds. Detectives did find a weapon on the scene.
At first glance, police say, it appeared to be a murder suicide but added that they were still investigating.
"There are several things, evidence that doesn't point to an exact murder suicide, so we're not disclosing anything at this point. We're not speculating as to what we have," said Capt. Suarez.
Police said they were not looking for a suspect.
