FIU Guard Declared Ineligible During Game
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – College players deal with eligibility problems from time to time, but Thursday night, Florida International guard Raymond Taylor was pulled from the game by school officials over an eligibility question.
Taylor, a fifth-year senior, was deemed ineligible for the season based upon the NCAA's draft rule. The NCAA allows players to declare for the draft, but withdraw before a certain date and return to college without losing eligibility.
Last year, Taylor declared for the draft in March. Taylor would go on to withdraw his name from the draft before the NBA's deadline to withdraw, June 20. But, Taylor didn't withdraw by April 10, which was the NCAA's deadline to pull out of the draft.
And that is why he is ineligible to play this year.
FIU gave a statement to CBS4 news partner the Miami Herald that read in part:
As a result of the information presented, the University has elected to withhold Ray from intercollegiate competition until the impact, if any, this information has on his eligibility status can be determined. A review is being conducted and will conclude as quickly as possible. Given that the issue involves student-athlete eligibility, there is no further information that we can provide at this time."
