MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) — Who said freshmen can't handle pressure?
Jose Borregales kicked three field goals, Thomas Owens had six receptions for 152 yards and FIU beat Tulane 23-10 Saturday night.
Borregales, a freshman, connected from 22, 42 and 39 yards and has made 6 of 7 attempts this season. Alex McGough passed for 220 with one touchdown and added 42 yards rushing on three carries, but threw two interceptions.
Owens had a 58-yard catch-and-run on third-and-6 and, four plays later, Pharoah McKever's 12-yard TD reception made it 7-0 and FIU (4-2) never trailed.
After Tulane's Dontrell Hilliard scored on a 12-yard run to make it 13-10 with 5:25 to go in the third, Shawndarrius Phillips capped a nine-play, 78-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run early in the fourth.
The Green Wave (3-3) converted just 2 of 11 third downs and 1 of 3 fourth downs and finished with 36 yards passing on 16 attempts. Hilliard finished with 12 carries for 90 yards.
