First Week Free On New 595 Express Bus

MIAMI (CBSMiami) –Everyone loves something FREE!

Broward County Transit will be giving free bus rides for a week to promote their brand spanking new 595 Express service.

The service kicks off Tuesday with two rush-hour routes from the Bank Atlantic Center's parking lot in Sunrise. One goes to downtown Fort Lauderdale, the other to downtown Miami.

If that isn't convenient enough, the buses will run every 30 minutes during the morning and peak rush hours.  It should take buses 40 to 50 minutes to travel Sunrise to Fort Lauderdale route and around 70 minutes to get from Sunrise to downtown Miami, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

If all goes according to plan, another express bus route from Weston will be up and running by fall.  This route will include stops at Jackson Memorial Hospital and the Civic Center area.

"We expect the Miami service to be more appealing, at least at first. This is due to several factors, including the added cost of paying for parking in Miami — not so much the case in Fort Lauderdale, but we will see,  Broward County Transit spokeswoman Phyllis Berry told the paper.

The bill is being covered by the Florida Department of Transportation.  It will cost $2.1 million for both the Sunrise and Weston routes. The state has also contributed $13.8 million to Broward County to buy buses and make improvements to the park-and-ride lots and stops.

Starting June 4, the fares will be $2.35 for a one-way trip, $23.50 for a 10-ride bus pass and $85 for premium monthly pass. The monthly passes are good for trips on all Broward County Transit buses.
