Firefighters Want Your Help To "Fill The Boot" For MDA
MIAMI (CBSMiami) - It's that time of year again when firefighters hit the streets, with boots in hand, all in the name of raising money for the neuromuscular disease, Muscular Dystrophy.
Firefighters will be posted at all major intersections this Labor Day weekend hoping to collect funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, MDA.
Thursday morning, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, the Miami Fire Department, the Coral Gables Fire Department, the Miami Beach Fire Department, the Metro-Dade Firefighters International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1403, along with the MDA and the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine all joined forces at UM School of Medicine to kick-off the weekend's annual event.
In addition to the fire personnel who will be standing under the hot Labor Day sun to ask for donations, the event featured individuals afflicted with neuromuscular diseases, as well as UM physicians and researchers who provided updates and latest breakthroughs.
Representatives from other local fire departments will also be in attendance.
The funds collected over the weekend will help provide research and family support counseling in the community. Also, the donations will aid in the purchase of wheelchairs and communication devices and will give children with neuromuscular diseases the chance at attending a MDA summer camp.
The MDA is a volunteer health agency working to defeat neuromuscular diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive services, and far-reaching professional and public health education.
