Fire Forces Evacuation Of Miami Beach Apartment Building
MIAMI BEACH (CBSMiami) - Residents of a Miami Beach apartment building were forced from their homes Tuesday morning after a fire erupted in one of the building's units.
The fire broke out on the second floor of the building at 1054 Euclid Avenue.
"Around 9 a.m. this morning we got the call. Heavy black smoke was pouring from it. Our first units on the scene was Ladder 1. They went inside and made a quick extinguishment. After that we did searches through the building, most of the people had self evacuated," said Miami Beach Fire operations Chief Juan Mestes.
The Red Cross was called in to assist the residents.
"We had about 40 firefighters here, 11 fire department units," said Mestos. "There was one injury to a firefigher."
The injured firefighter was taken to Mt. Sinai Medical Center for heat exhaustion treatment. A second firefighter and resident of the building were treated at the scene.
Miami Beach police said flames from the fire led to a transformer explosion on the southeast corner of the building. Electricity to the building has been turned off.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
