Fire Forces Dozens From Lauderhill Apartments

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) - Fire crews responded to the International Village apartment building on the 3600 block of Inverrary Drive in Lauderhill just after 5 p.m. and found a first floor unit engulfed in flames according to Lauderhill Fire Capt. Jeff Levy.

When they entered the second floor unit, they found a 2 year old and a 4 year old left alone and crying in the adjacent apartment which was quickly filling up with smoke from the fire next door.

Police determined that the children's father was downstairs throwing out the trash and quickly rushed back to the building upon discovering the fire, said Lauderhill Police spokesperson Constance Stanley.

The children were rescued and treated on the scene by paramedics. No one else was injured. The building was evacuated while crews fought the blaze.

Officials say the fire is accidental, and a stove may be to blame.
