Fins Place WR Gibson On Injured Reserve

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Miami Dolphins need some help at wide receiver after the team placed Brandon Gibson on injured reserve Tuesday.

The move was expected after Gibson suffered a serious knee injury in the Dolphins' loss to the New England Patriots last Sunday. Gibson, who was having a solid season with Miami, suffered the knee injury when he leaped for a pass during the game.

With Gibson out, the Dolphins invited several free agent wide receivers into the facility on Tuesday including: Matt Willis, Mohamed Massquoi, and Mike Thomas. Massquoi has the most name recognition for his time playing as the University of Georgia and for the Cleveland Browns.

Thomas is a 5'8" receiver who averaged 53 catches in his first few seasons in the league, but fell out of favor with the Jaguars. He might be the best of the weak crop of receivers to fill in a slot receiver role the Dolphins needs help filling with Gibson gone.

The Fins don't have to sign a receiver as they are likely to promote Rishard Matthews into the starting lineup in Gibson's absence. Plus, the Fins played tight ends Dion Sims and Michael Egnew more after Gibson was injured against the Patriots.

The Dolphins could work a trade for a receiver, but that didn't appear likely with Tuesday's trade deadline nearing.
