Fins Closing In On Mike Wallace
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – While most of us spent the weekend enjoying some time off, the Miami Dolphins were hard at work trying to woo the top wide receiver in free agency to sign with the team.
According to USA Today, the Dolphins contacted wide receiver Mike Wallace and is putting on a full-court press to land the speedy receiver, formerly of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Carrying it a step-further, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter said that "league-wide expectations is WR Mike Wallace winds up in Miami."
Sports Illustrated's Peter King wrote in his Monday Morning Quarterback column that "Miami didn't have much, if any, competition for a big-money deal ($11 million or more a year) for wide receiver Mike Wallace."
Finally, the Palm Beach Post's Ben Volin said a source told the paper that "it's a 'done deal' that Wallace will be signing with Miami.'"
Wallace is the player Miami has been coveting for weeks. His speed and ability would completely open up the offense because defenses would have to respect Wallace's ability to go deep at any time. In theory, this would open up underneath routes for Brian Hartline, Davone Bess, and a tight end.
"He'll translate well to that offense," former NFL executive Bill Polian of ESPN told the Palm Beach Post.
That said; the fact that Pittsburgh, universally heralded as one of the best franchises in the NFL, chose to let Wallace leave and the fact that no other team is reportedly in contention to pony up big bucks for Wallace may be a sign of something else.
