Fins CB Problems May Get Much-Needed Help
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Miami Dolphins have a glaring hole at cornerback after letting Sean Smith leave via free agency and while the team has been spending big in free agency, general manager Jeff Ireland may not be done yet.
According to CBSSports.com's Jason La Canfora, the Fins are still "very much in on CB Brent Grimes, who played on franchise tag in '12. Could land there soon."
Grimes is a quality veteran cornerback who before going down with a season-ending injury in the first game of 2012, was a solid starting cornerback for the Atlanta Falcons. Grimes had 11 interceptions and more than 150 total tackles in 2009 and 2010.
Grimes suffered a torn Achilles tendon in the first game of the 2012 regular season. His recovery is said to be on schedule, but the injury can take up to a year or more to fully recover from. If healthy, Grimes would arguably be an upgrade over the departed Sean Smith.
The Dolphins' primary competition for Grimes, according to NFL.com, is the Cleveland Browns. The Browns reportedly have a multi-year contract on the table for the former Falcons corner. Miami may only offer a one-year deal for the injured veteran, though nothing has been confirmed.
If the Dolphins signed Grimes, the team's starting corners would both be coming back from season-ending injuries. In a division with Tom Brady, that could be a recipe for disaster if the pass rush can't get to the quarterback.
