Fins 1st Depth Chart Names Garrard As Starting QB
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – While it's only the first depth chart of the season, the Miami Dolphins' Monday release of its depth chart began to clear the air on the quarterback situation with the team.
According to the new depth chart, David Garrard is currently listed as the team's starting quarterback. He's followed on the depth chart by Matt Moore, rookie Ryan Tannehill, and last year's practice squad quarterback Pat Devlin.
Most reports out of Dolphins training camp have labeled Garrard as the man to beat in the quarterback race. Garrard is looking to regain the form that helped him lead the Jacksonville Jaguars to the playoffs after spending an entire year out of football.
Elsewhere on the depth chart, there are several positions that look to be locked up and a few that are still very fluid.
On the offensive line, the starters appear to be set with from left to right: Jake Long, Richie Incognito, Mike Pouncey, Artis Hick, and Jonathan Martin. The former Stanford stand-out left tackle switched to right tackle and appears to be learning the position well on an accelerated learning curve.
In the offensive backfield, the Dolphins list the running backs in the following order: Reggie Bush, Daniel Thomas, Steve Slaton, Lamar Miller, Marcus Thigpen, and Jonas Gray. Thigpen is quickly carving out a niche on special teams and Miller could do the same or challenge for carries if his pass blocking improves.
The fullback position wasn't a focus in the offseason, but a potential starter may have been found in huge way. Former Texas A&M University stand out Jorvorskie Lane was listed atop the depth chart. The massive running back is listed at 5'11", 277 pounds and was once a one-man wrecking crew for the Aggies.
Also on the offensive side of the ball, Chad Johnson, Legedu Naanee, and Davone Bess are the starters at the three wide receiver positions. Anthony Fasano is listed as the offense's starting tight end, which is not a surprise.
Finally, right offensive guard John Jerry looks like he will be on his way out of town with the first round of roster cuts as he has been demoted all the way down to third string behind Nate Garner.
Defensively, the Dolphins have three rookies listed as backups along the line. Rookie Derrick Shelby is listed as the top backup to left defensive end starter Jared Odrick. At nose tackle, rookie Kheeston Randall is the number two defensive tackle behind starter Paul Soliai. Finally at right defensive end, rookie Olivier Vernon is the backup to pass rushing phenom Cameron Wake.
Former cornerback and seventh-round pick Jimmy Wilson has transitioned to safety and is entrenched as the number two safety behind starter Chris Clemons.
Past that, the defense looks similar to last year with one more glaring exception. Cornerback Vontae Davis, who was a first-round pick just a few years ago, is listed at number two behind free agent acquisition Richard Marshall.
