5 Shot, 1 Died In Shooting Outside NW Miami-Dade Bar
MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- One man was killed, four others were injured in an overnight shooting in northwest Miami-Dade.
It happened outside the Chicagoan Bar at 10702 NW. 7th Avenue early Tuesday.
Police originally said it began when a man was escorted out of the building for not paying for his drinks. They later said, on further investigation, he was kicked out after he assaulted the woman he was with.
The man left and then returned around midnight, parked his car in the middle of the street, got out, and started shooting at the security guard standing outside the bar, according to police.
A security guard fired back, police said, and another guard also came outside and began shooting. One of the security guards and the subject were hit. Police said the subject died on the scene.
Colleen Harpool, who owns Cliff's restaurant right next to the bar and who has been in the neighborhood for 30 years, told CBS4's Peter D'Oench, "This is not good for the neighborhood. People are scared to go out. They can't go out because they are too scared. This makes me think what is going on in the neighborhood. I have been here so long and nothing like this has happened before. This is a quiet neighborhood. I feel bad for those who were shot. Because this could have been anybody."
Now Harpool remains on guard.
"I tell everyone just to be safe and to be careful."
Across N.W. 7th Ave, Carlos, who did not want to give his last name, runs a paint and auto body shop.
"I work across the street and I can tell you this is a good neighborhood," he said. "I have been here for 42 years.
But Carlos says he has been trying to get something down about the litter left behind by patrons from the bar. "What needs to happen is that the owner needs to take care," he said.
"I have called the city and the county and I have called police. But nobody helps me. It is dirty here and we need to do something about it being dirty here."
Three women were caught in the crossfire. Miami-Dade police said one of those women was grazed by a bullet and refused to stay on the scene.
The security guard and the other two women were taken to the hospital, all listed as stable, according to police.
CBS4 tried to speak with the manager and the owner of the bar. But we were told that no one wanted to comment on camera. One employee told D'Oench that the security guard who was wounded is going to be ok.
