FIFA World Cup Trophy Arrives In South Florida
MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- The World Cup will kick off this June in Brazil and Tuesday, the highly coveted FIFA World Cup Trophy arrived in South Florida.
The trophy arrived at Miami International Airport as part of its nine-month global tour covering a total of 90 countries.
Tuesday's stop in Miami is only the second in the United States so far.
The trophy was in Washington, D.C. on Monday at the State Department where Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of State John Kerry were on hand to welcome it.
In South Florida, those who welcomed the solid-gold trophy included Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez, Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado, and Florida's Lt. Governor Carlos Lopez-Cantera.
The trophy will also make stops in Atlanta on April 17th and there will be a special open to the public fan event in Los Angeles starting April 18th.
The FIFA trophy will be awarded to the winner of this year's World Cup soccer tournament which takes place in Brazil in June.
