FHP: Surveyor Killed By I-95 Driver Who Tried Passing Slower Traffic

POMPANO BEACH (CBSMiami) – The Florida Highway Patrol says a surveyor was killed on I-95 in Pompano Beach on Friday afternoon while working on a construction project.
FHP says the surveyor, 59-year-old Enrique Diaz, was wearing a reflective vest and was in a striped area just on the highway which separates the inside lane from the traffic merging onto 95.
Investigators say that's when a driver crossed into that restricted area and hit Diaz.
Diaz was taken to Broward Health Medical Center where he died.
The Florida Highway Patrol says the driver of the car, Edwin Alexander Lord, of Lauderhill, hit and killed Diaz, who was working on the Express Lanes project for a company hired by the Florida Department of Transportation.
Investigators say Lord crossed into the striped area to get around slower traffic and slammed into Diaz.
Aerials from Chopper4 showed the windshield of Lord's car was smashed in.
The department of transportation tells CBS4 News that Diaz worked for a Miami company, Hadonne Survey.
An employee at the company told CBS4 they sent most workers home due to the accident. They also said that after all the close calls they've had as surveyors it finally caught up with them on Friday.
CBS4 News asked FHP about the move over law. Sgt. Mark Wysocky told us it does not appear to apply in this situation.
The accident remains under investigation and no charges have been filed at this point.
CBS4 News checked Broward County traffic records and found a man named Edwin Alexander Lord from Lauderhill who is the same age as the driver in this fatal crash. That man has had two speeding tickets and two careless driving citations since 2009.
