MIAMI (CBSMiami) – An innocent driver was caught in the crossfire on the Palmetto Expressway early Monday morning leaving bullet holes in their car.
It happened in the eastbound lanes near the Northwest 27th Avenue exit of the highway around 12:30 a.m.
The Florida Highway Patrol says the occupants of two white cars exchanged gunfire, hitting the innocent driver's car, shattering the rear window and leaving a bullet hole in the back bumper.
"We don't have a reason why there was an exchange of gunfire," said Joe Sanchez of the Florida Highway Patrol.
Sanchez says one of the shooters was traveling in a white Porsche Panamera.
The other white car wasn't identified.
"We can't speculate if its road rage or started somewhere else," he said.
Just after the gunfire on the highway, FHP says they learned an occupant of one of the cars was dropped off bleeding at Jackson Health North Medical Center.
"We are looking at cameras from the hospital to see who dropped him off," said Sanchez.
That gunshot victim is expected to recover.
FHP is also looking at a bullet fragment that was recovered from the trunk of the car caught in the crossfire.
Anyone with additional information is urged to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-8477 or (305) 471-TIPS.
