FHP: At Least 3 Dead In Fiery Crash On Okeechobee Road
MIAMI (CBSMiami) - The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly crash on Okeechobee Rd. in Northwest Miami-Dade where at least three people were killed.
The wreck happened just after 8:30 p.m. Wednesday on Okeechobee Rd. west of the Turnpike, said FHP spokesman Joe Sanchez.
According to investigators, a car was traveling northbound on Okeechobee Rd. when the driver lost control of the vehicle, jumped over the median, and slammed into an oncoming car.
The people in the car traveling southbound were killed. The driver died on scene and the passenger, a five-year-old girl, was pronounced dead at Jackson Memorial Hospital just after 10 p.m., Sanchez said.
It was unclear whether one or two people were inside the car that spun out of control.
Sanchez said the medical examiner would have to review the evidence before making a final determination.
The damage to the car was so severe, the make and model could not be immediately identified.
"It's bad. It is bad. I've been doing this for 25 years and this is up there," Sanchez said.
Sanchez said investigators are looking into the possibility the driver may have been racing.
"This area has a history of kids coming out here and racing. It happens all the time," Sanchez said. "We don't know, we don't have any witnesses that say the vehicles were racing, but what we can determine based on the evidence at the scene, the scene itself, one of the vehicles was definitely traveling at a high rate of speed."
Troopers have not released the names of the victims.
The road was closed for several hours for the investigation.
