FedEx In Overdrive During Top Shipping Day
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Christmas is more than two weeks ago, but FedEx expects Monday to not only be its busiest shipping day of the year but also the busiest day its history.
As people scramble to send out Christmas presents on time, an estimated 19 million packages will be sent via FedEx Monday, that's more than double the company's typical daily volume and a 10-percent jump from last year.
What's the reason for the increase? A surge in online shopping, mainly. FedEx cites one survey forecasting that online sales will rise by 17% this holiday. This week is expected to be the busiest online shopping week of the year.
If you're the procrastinating type, FedEx says the latest day you can send your presents to make it for Christmas is December 17th. After that ,premium FedEx Express delivery service will be required, with a last day to ship of Dec. 22.
FedEx expects a record-breaking holiday shipping season due to the increased popularity of online shopping and all the shipping-related promotions and "holidays." About 280 million packages are expected to move through the FedEx system between Thanksgiving and Christmas day. That's up 13-percent from 2011.
