Fed. Court Investigating Shapiro's Atty. In UM Case
CORAL GABLES (CBSMiami) – The strange and seemingly never-ending saga surrounding Nevin Shapiro, the University of Miami, and the NCAA has taken another turn in federal court.
U.S. District Judge Federico A. Moreno is asking in a new order if Shapiro's attorney, Maria Elena Perez, acted unethically in her relationship with the NCAA.
Judge Moreno asked whether Perez acted unethically by taking money from the NCAA for her work in Nevin Shapiro's bankruptcy case. Moreno wants a court committee to issue a report and recommendations by May 8.
The same committee looked into Perez's actions following a separate case in 2010. The Florida Bar Association is also looking into Perez's work with the NCAA.
Perez became a lightning rod in the NCAA's case against Shapiro after the NCAA said it committed errors and broke its own rules by partnering with Perez to obtain information through bankruptcy depositions the NCAA wouldn't have otherwise had access to see.
