FDA Warns S. Florida Of Avastin Problems

MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) – The Food and Drug Administration is warning health care professionals that injections of Avastin have sparked a cluster of serious eye infections in South Florida.

According to the FDA, a pharmacy in Hollywood, Florida repackaged Avastin from sterile injectable 100 mg/4 ml, single-use, preservative-free vials to individual 1 ml single-use syringes. The pharmacy then sent the Avastin to multiple eye clinics to use on patients.

The FDA said at least a dozen patients in three different clinics have developed eye infections. The FDA said the patients who developed the problems had visual deficits prior to their infections, but some lost all vision in the eye that developed the infection.

The FDA and the Florida Department of Health are trying to find the exact cause of the infection.
