FBI Names David Edwin Bradley As Turnpike Shooter
HOLLYWOOD (CBSMiami) -- The FBI named David Edwin Bradley, 23, of Miami Gardens, Florida as the man who carjacked two cars, robbed a Broward barber shop, and then shot two law enforcement officers on the Florida Turnpike Thursday evening.
The FBI said Bradley, 23, had a criminal background prior to the events that transpired Thursday.
At the same time, the two South Florida law enforcement officers shot Thursday continue to recover.
Assistant Field Office Director Gabriel Martinez from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency was also shot, though not seriously wounded. He's a 10-year veteran of ICE's Enforcement and Removal Operations in Miami.
Officials say Key Biscayne officer Nelia M. Real, a 16-year veteran, was shot in the face and rushed to Memorial Regional Hospital, where she is listed in critical, but stable, condition.
CBS4 obtained an exclusive photo of Real's patrol car with a bullet hole in the driver's side window.
FBI spokesman Timothy Donovan said the incident began with a carjacking at NW 75th Street and 27th Avenue in Northwest Miami-Dade. Bradley then drove north to Broward County, where he robbed Maxim Cuts barber shop in Pembroke Pines, then stole a second car, an Infiniti G35, authorities said.
In the Infiniti, Bradley crashed into another car on the Turnpike near the Pembroke Road exit.
Officer Real, from Key Biscayne, was driving to her home in Fort Lauderdale when she saw the crash and tried to help. Instead, the suspect shot her in the neck.
BSO deputy Osvaldo Petitfrere, 32, with the Dania Beach district, rushed her to the hospital.
Key Biscayne Police Chief Charles Press thanked deputy Petitfrere, and said that Real might owe him her life.
"We're very fortunate with her wounds. The bullet missed her vital organs," said Key Biscayne Police Chief Charles Press. "She will be kept sedated for several days until doctors can see the extent of her wounds from the gunshot to the neck and her facial area. She is completely sedated. Her vital signs are good and doctors are cautiously optimistic."
A second officer, part of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, was traveling southbound on the turnpike and also saw what was happening. Police say that officer got out to help, and was shot in the arm.
Both officers are expected to recover.
BSO deputy Enid Conley, 23, with the Dania Beach district, was also injured when she was involved in an accident on I-95 and Sheridan Street while responding to the scene. She suffered a broken leg and is recovering at Memorial Regional Hospital.
Immediately after the shootings, motorists stuck in traffic reported seeing a man dressed in all black with a gun as he walked on the median on the Turnpike.
Traffic on the Turnpike in both directions was stopped for hours while the suspect's body remained in the roadway covered with a yellow tarp.
The Turnpike was shut down for about 12 hours and reopened early Friday morning.
Bradley's main problems in both Miami-Dade and Broward County was due to cocaine and marijuana possession. Bradley had four drug cases in his history in Miami-Dade County and one in Broward County.
