MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The FBI has announced the arrest of a man who allegedly stole over $3 million from an armored car courier company in Miami.
Jose Agurto, 37, of Miami, was arrested in San Diego on Saturday on charges of stealing approximately $3.2 million on New Year's Day at a Brinks facility.
FBI agents arrested Agurto without incident and located money during and subsequent to the arrest.
The amount of money that was recovered has not been released.
The Doral Police Department, Miami-Dade Police Department and FBI's South Florida Violent Crime Task Force are also investigating this matter.
The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney's Office, Southern District of Florida.
Agurto began working with Brinks located at 5575 NW 87th Avenue in Doral in September of 2015.
Per the FBI criminal complaint, Agurto arrived at the Doral location at approximately 12p.m. on January 1st.
At approximately 1:45p.m. he entered the Cash Logistics Inventory Location, which is where the vault which secures currency is located, and released the only other Brinks employee present at the time.
Surveillance video shows Agurto in the Cash Logistics Vault where he removes two bags of currency.
Agurto is then seen on surveillance video placing the bags into two boxes. He then rolled the two boxes with the money, along with additional boxes that authorities believe are empty, out of the building using a flat cart.
He is then seen placing the boxes with the currency into a white Volkswagen, 4-door sedan.
After briefly reentering the Brinks building, Agurto is seen leaving the premises in the white Volkswagen.
He returned a few minutes later and completed his work shift, but left a letter of resignation and his service weapon on a desk before leaving the building.
Following his arrest, Agurto was booked into the Metropolitan Correctional Center in San Diego where he will remain pending his initial appearance before a U.S. Magistrate Judge on Monday, January 11th.
