CORAL SPRINGS (CBSMiami) – A 14-year-old girl remains hospitalized with head injuries after her father says she was seriously injured in a fight at Coral Springs High School Thursday.
However, Coral Springs Police said their investigation has not determined exactly where and when the girl received some of those injuries.
The video, provided to CBS4 by Marc Sheltra, father of the injured girl, Stephanie, shows a standoff between two male students at Coral Springs High School. Also in the video trying to break things up is Stephanie Sheltra. A short time later, the video shows one boy body slamming the other to the ground. Out of camera's view, Marc Sheltra says, his daughter got knocked back and hit her head. He said she suffered head trauma and later had black eyes and contusions on her face.
"She got hit in the side of the head and that's where she has memory loss," he said. "And then you can see her face. She doesn't know how she got the black eye, how she got the contusions on her face."
Sheltra said he demanded answers from everyone – the principal, the school resource officer and the Coral Springs Police. But he says he couldn't get straight answers about what happened to his child.
"That (school resource) officer gave me the impression that they had their victim," he said. "They had their videotape. They're done. So basically I was causing a problem by presenting another victim."
Coral Springs Police told CBS4 News that according to their investigation, Stephanie complained only of hitting her head and having headaches during the fight at the school. Investigators said witnesses told them they did not see those bruises and cuts to her face. A police spokesperson said at this point, they do not know how or when Stephanie received those injuries. Police said they have exhausted all of their leads at this time.
Marc Sheltra said his daughter is too upset to look at the video and doesn't recall much about what happened. However, he said he's sure of two things. One, that fights like this should not happen at a school. And two, that he will dig until he finds out who hurt his daughter.
"I want to see the rest of the videos," he said. "I want to see who put their hands on my daughter. And I want to see change."
Coral Springs Police told CBS4's Carey Codd the student who body slammed the other boy was charged as a juvenile with simple battery.
