FAMU Marches On With New Band Director
TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami) – Another big change is near for Florida A&M University's Marching 100 which hopes to return to the field in the future.
FAMU is scheduled to name a new band director on Tuesday, at noon, to take the place of long-time band director Julian White who retired amid the fallout in the death of band drum major Robert Champion.
Champion, 26, was found dead on a bus in a hotel parking lot after a hazing ritual done by members of his FAMU Marching 100 band.
Eleven people have been charged in Champion's death. In November 2011, the school suspended the band.
The university has since made sweeping changes to combat hazing, including putting in new requirements for future band members. FAMU announced Monday it had hired a compliance director for the university music department and recently interviewed two finalists for the job.
Interim President Larry Robinson has said he will decide this month whether the band will be back on the field during the 2013 football season.
