Families & Pregnant Women: Zika & Mosquito Prevention

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Zika virus disease is caused by the Zika virus, which is spread primarily through the bite of infected mosquitoes. While people who are infected experience mild symptoms lasting up to a week, and in many cases present no symptoms at all, pregnant women in particular need to take precautions as Zika can cause certain birth defects.

Currently, there is no vaccine to prevent Zika virus infection. However, there are ways a woman can protect her pregnancy, including:

• Limit the amount of time outdoors during peak times. Daytime is most dangerous as mosquitoes that spread Zika are aggressive daytime biters. They can also bite at night.
• Use insect repellent. Read the label and follow the directions.
• Cover your skin. Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants. For extra protection, treat clothing with permethrin.
• Mosquito-proof your home.
  • Use screens on windows and doors.
  • Use air conditioning when available.
  • Eliminate standing water (drain and cover).
