Fake FBI Jackets Worn During Hialeah Home Invasion
HIALEAH (CBSMiami) – A home invasion complete with robbers wearing jackets that said FBI ended with money from a small safe being taken from a Hialeah home.
According to investigators, five people were in the home at the time of the home invasion. But, only one person was tied up by the three robbers.
"They say three males dressed as FBI agents or cops wearing raid jackets, police hats, forced their way into the house at gunpoint. Held them captive for several minutes as they ransacked the house," said Hialeah Police Spokesman Carl Zogby. "During that time they tied up one of the victims, unknown for what reason."
After grabbing the money, police said the intruders ran from the scene in a white Hummer.
"The three of them were armed with handguns, so it was a very dangerous situation," said Zogby. "Luckily they didn't shoot anybody. No one was hurt physically in any way. They left with some money."
When police arrived at the home near the corner of West 74th Place and West 36th Avenue, neighbors began coming outside to see what happened.
"Very quiet neighborhood," said Aaron Ojeda. "Every time you pass by here in the morning it's people just watering their lawns. Seeing cops like this is really something out of the ordinary. I'm pretty sure everyone is stopping and wondering what's going on."
Police are still interviewing the victims trying to determine whether the people inside the home were targeted.
"We don't know at this moment why they would be targeted," said Zogby. "But a large percentage of these cases are not random and they are targeted because someone believes you have cash in the house or something of value. A lot of times, we do develop leads from the victims themselves who might have an idea of why they were targeted."
