FAA Refusing To Approve Runway Expansion Deal For Dania Beach Residents
DANIA BEACH (CBS4) - A multi-million dollar settlement for Dania Beach residents who live near Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport may be in jeopardy.
The Federal Aviation Administration is refusing to sign off on an unprecedented deal that would have resolved a long-standing fight over a runway expansion at the airport.
The deal would have paid more than 800 Dania Beach homeowners 20 percent of the value of their homes.
The money would have been compensation for the excessive noise created by the expansion of the south runway and would have cost the FAA about 48 million dollars.
Airport officials say they will continue with the project.
Meanwhile, Dania Beach commissioners will vote tomorrow on whether to back out of the deal.
The city could also decide to continue its' lengthy legal battle against the expanded runway.
