Experimental Drug Use Among Fla. Teens Drops

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/AP) — Florida teenagers aren't experimenting with drugs as much as they have in the past.

Child welfare officials say the number of Florida middle and high school students experimenting with marijuana, alcohol and prescription drugs has dropped.

The 2011 Florida Youth Substance Abuse Survey showed less than 10 percent of students tried drugs other than marijuana within 30 days of the survey. Twelve percent of students reported using marijuana, a decline from 2010.

All drug use except marijuana has declined each year from 2002 to 2011.

Alcohol continues to be the most commonly used drug among Florida students with about 50 percent saying they've tried it at some point. One in eight reported binge drinking in the past two weeks.

The results come from a 2011 survey of 11,491 students in grades 6 through 12.
