FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami/AP) - A former officer from New York was sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in a $200,000 cocaine deal in Florida.
A Fort Lauderdale federal judge sentenced Phillip LeRoy, 28, who was twice named "Cop of the Year" in his Queens precinct.
LeRoy pleaded guilty to a drug trafficking conspiracy charge in March and resigned from the police department.
LeRoy admitted providing security and carrying his off-duty gun during a drug deal that involved bringing about 22 pounds of cocaine from Florida to New York. The deal turned out to be a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration sting operation.
Court records show LeRoy is cooperating with investigators and could have his sentence reduced.
Two other men have pleaded guilty in the case.
