Enthusiastic Fan Injures Olympic Swimmer Ryan Lochte's Knee
GAINESVILLE (CBSMiami/AP) – Olympic Swimmer Ryan Lochte is no stranger to enthusiastic fans, but one fan in particular may have gotten a little carried away, causing injury to the swimmer's knee.
Lochte, a five-time Olympic champion who competed competitively for the University of Florida, tore a ligament and sprained another in his left knee last weekend during a visit Gainesville.
During his visit, a teenage girl, assumingly over-excited, ran at Lochte. He tried catch the girl but fell over in the process, according to his publicist. Lochte hit his knee on a curb but the girl was not hurt.
Publicist Janice Lee says in a statement issued Tuesday that Lochte's medical team expects him "to make a full and speedy recovery."
Lochte tweeted that he was headed to Gainesville last weekend. He trained there for several years after competing for the University of Florida. He has moved his training to Charlotte, N.C.
Lochte is next scheduled to represent the U.S. in the Duel in the Pool meet in Scotland on Dec. 20-21.
