Empty Seats Dominate Marlins Park

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – While the Marlins continue searching for their first home win of the season, it's becoming just as difficult to find fans in the stands at the multi-billion dollar Marlins Park.

The first game of the season had an announced attendance of 34,439, which is a good crowd, but not quite a sellout like many teams get for the first home game of the season.

But, after the first home game, attendance collapsed.

Officially, the Marlins announced a crowd of 14,222 for Tuesday night's game against the Atlanta Braves. However, as the photo below shows, finding 14,222 in Marlins Park that night may have been easier than solving a quadratic equation.

By Wednesday night, attendance at Marlins Park fell even further to an announced crowd of 13,810. The crowd that was in the park saw a solid pitching matchup until the fifth inning when the Braves exploded for six runs.

The Marlins never threatened the Braves after Atlanta's offensive outburst.

While the sample size is incredibly small, if the Marlins draw similar crowds to Tuesday and Wednesday night for the rest of the season, the team will bring in roughly 1.14 million fans this season.

If that number held all season long, it would be a drop-off of roughly 500,000 fans from last season and be the worst attendance in baseball using last year's numbers.
